Sheldon, I know that you and a bunch of other people are going to love this.

Mary's Molasses-Raisin Cookies

3/4 cup of shortening
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of molasses
1 egg
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups of flour
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp of salt
1 cup of raisins (or more if you like)

Melt shortening in a saucepan. Let cool, empty into mixing bowl. Add sugar, molasses, egg and beat well. Sift in dry ingredients, mixing well. Chill. Roll into 1" balls, roll in sugar, and place on greased cookie sheet, 2" apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Now Rodney (does anyone have his email address?) can have one without digging it out of the ground!

I was a little afraid to pull up this discussion with "The Recipe" as the title. Thanks, Raymond. Did Rodney actually do that?

Absolutely. He was begging me for some and I dug a hole, threw them in and covered them with dirt. He dug them up, brushed them off, and ate them. I told mom about it and she yelled at me. If I remember correctly, she called him up to the house and gave him a bag of his own.

Dad loved to tell the story of how Raymond used to use these cookies "like money" with the neighborhood kids to trade for things he wanted. And since we were the only ones in the neighborhood with "the recipe" I guess maybe I should have realized we had a hot commodity!
